About

We named the studio after how it started.

Moonlighting: the work you do after the day job is finished. That is where both of us built our first products, and it is still the kind of client we understand best.

The studio has existed since 2019. Before that we spent a combined fourteen years inside product teams — one of us on the design side, one on the front-end — and left for the same reason: the interesting part of the work kept getting buried under coordination.

How we work

Two people, no subcontractors, no account layer between you and whoever is writing the code. You talk to the person doing the work. When we are full, we say we are full instead of quietly hiring around it.

Everything is asynchronous by default. One scheduled call a week, written updates the rest of the time, so you can read them when it suits you and keep a record of what was decided.

What we believe, briefly

  • A short engagement with a clear end date beats an open-ended retainer for everyone involved.
  • Most products are slow because of what was added, not what was missing.
  • Handover is part of the work. If you need us after the block to keep the thing running, we did it wrong.
  • Saying "this is not our problem to solve" early is worth more than a signed contract.

Practical details

We are based in the CET time zone and work with clients across Europe and the eastern United States. Invoices are issued in EUR. Contracts are short and in plain language; we are happy to sign yours instead if your legal team prefers it.

Static assets for this site and for client projects are served from cdn.moonlihting.site, which we run ourselves.
